Me+ Baking =

I wanted to bake Jeremy a pie. I wanted it to be so so special. He loves fruit pies and dessert. Me not so much. But this dessert was going to be for him. I had seen it on Oprah (clue #1 it was going to be FABULOUS!) and on that show it was Cindy Crawford who said she makes it all the time and keeps it in her fridge constantly (clue #2) So I set out to make it, as a surprise, for the very first time for Valentines day. The day of love. And this pie would say so.

Buying the ingredients to said pie was fairly easy until I had to find rhubarb. What the @^%$ does rhubarb look like? The word on the street was “red celery.” So the search began. And continued. And continued on. I mean if it’s not in the produce section of Kroger I have no idea where to look. Miracle of all miracles I ran into one of Jeremy’s high school buddies in the middle of the hunt. She’s super smart but also a nutritionist so I knew she would be able to lead me to the promised plant. Vegetable? Fruit? She confirmed that there was no fresh available and advised me to look in the frozen section. Genius.

The hunt continued. So while in the artic I am finding many new things but not rhubarb. Rhubarb?! Rhubarb?! Where are you?!!! So the cold caused me to remember something. Sometimes things that are frozen are also found in cans. Who is the smart one now!

The can aisle. Looking up and down. All around. Finally there it is! I grab 2 moderate sized cans to make sure I will have enough. Purchase all my ingredients and walk victoriously with my head held high to the car. Kroger did not defeat me this time!

When I got home I stripped the labels off the cans because it was a surprise, remember. And I still had a few days until the big day and I didn’t want him getting any ideas. I mean what else do you use rhubarb for?

So when the love day comes I commence baking. First let me say that I realized the first four or so ingredients just made the crust. Disappointing. I could’ve bought that. I tell myself that it will be better since it is homemade and press on to the filling part. This was easy. You just mix strawberries, rhubarb and sugar (maybe one or two other things small amounts though) together. This is going splendid. So the canned rhubarb is working out but it doesn’t look like red celery. Who was it that told me that? They must not know what they’re talking about. This was more like red/brown mush. Hmmm. So I cover the pie with the second crust and begin to bake.

The mush keeps sitting in my head. It really didn’t look like anything that would go with strawberries. Or in a pie. But then again, neither does “red celery”. I think about pulling the cans out of the trash but I remember I tore the labels off days ago. What to do? I tell Jeremy my dilemma in secret code. I may have messed up and I don’t know how to fix it.

I can’t shake it off. The pie is starting to emit an aroma but not that sweet smelling. Then I remember. Sometimes on can lids they give you some data like expiration etc. So against all odds I check it. This is what I see…

RUTA

Now that is exceptionally odd. How do you spell Rhubarb. R-U- B something, something… I’m thinking.

Holy Holly Hobby!

I just made a strawberry RUTBAGA pie. For my hubby. For love day.

Yay.

Something to ponder when naming children

In this new day and age of search engines it makes it pretty easy to locate someone or at least get more info than if it were a more common name. hhhhhhmmmmmmmm. This is officially a new dislike for my name.

My Comeback Post

No pressure right. Well this post will not live up to any expecations I promise. If you even have any. I don't. What am I going to say...
Last night while laying in bed I acclamied (don't worry it's PG)
"I could be a Jehovah's Witness" What I meant was who needs holidays when every day is wonderful and a blessing from God. Every day I get another chance to live and love and worship and enjoy. I'm good with that. Every day Jeremy makes me feel special so it really really is okay that we never celebrated Valentines Day for officially the first time in our relationship. A fact which still makes him feel horrible. Which further proves my point.

Also I decided that the hours between 10pm-2am if by some chance I'm awake and not drooling on my pillow already, consistently cause me to reminesce and feel nostalgic. And last night I wondered if that would always be true. And then I was thankful again that I can be nostalgic and cheerful at the same time. I want that always to be true.

If I haven't mentioned it before

this is my favorite book!

I read this book in middle school and it has remained with me to this day. Not the same copy but the story itself and it is never far from my mind. I think that it is especially meaningful to those in the helping field. However I loved it even before I was "in the helping field" so I know its a good book for all. It won a Newberry Medal so someone else besides me thinks its good. Its quick read maybe like a 6th or 8th grade reading level and just over a hundred pages so even the most timid reader could quickly and easily accomplish. Please if you haven't already get your hands on this book- I would give you mine but I'm currently out of stock- I usually get one reread it and pass it on- have I mentioned I like it?
I could tell you more but I don't know how much you would want to know. Some of you might like suspense. You can click on the picture above to link to amazon and scroll down for a review.

Would make a good stocking stuffer!

I come by it honest

Once upon a time in a far away land...okay not really just in Tennessee, at Red Lobsters, my Mamaw was walking through the waiting area and passed the lobster tank then to no one in particular she exclaimed "It's a wonder they don't drown!"

Monday, December 7, 2009

Okay so I might have mentioned before but I tend to struggle with a little thing called...moderation. I don't know if you've noticed but I put in one of those traffic feeders so I can see who is stopping by, really not who but where. Anyways for the most part there have been no surprises but occasionally someone shows up from a google search. Some searches strange and some not. To be perfectly honest I have searched some strange things on google myself, and would never want then publicised. All that to say is now due to the information at hand, courtesy of the traffic feeder thingy, I am more aware of being "seen". On some level I am okay with that, obviously because I have a blog. Then I have other parts that want to hide! So (get to the point already right, sorry I'm trying!) I think I can avoid the blog being found if I don't say names or use personal pronouns- am I making sense? Again this has lead to the thought of naming the blog something else and/or creating names for myself and the people in my life. Should I do it? And if so any suggestions? I really don't want to go private, not at this point.

Things I do that I don't like to admit

Okay so not a personal vulnerable post, I mean like weird things that I would never admit that I am admitting now. Why? I haven't a clue.

I watch Gracie when she poops. Like the poop action, not her face.

After I blow my nose or whatever I do with my nose and a Kleenex I look at it after its done.

I don't flush the toilet if its just urine. I could say I'm "green" ya know like "if its yellow let it mellow if its brown flush it down" but that just ain't the truth.

Sometimes I find sleepy in my eyes after lunch cause that was the first real look in the mirror I gave myself.

If we're "running" to the store and I don't have to get out of the car I can be found exiting my house in embarrassing attire. like pj's or worse...

We have netflix, 2 at a time, but at least 3 times a year go for a month or more without even watching the movies but not mailing them back because "we'll want to watch eventually."

I have a habit that I am trying to break but historically I take approximately 15 mins to get ready in the morning. Just imagine what you can do in 15 mins. and that's about it for me...

There's more but I still want you to be my friend, I'm afraid if I say more you might not be. I'll leave it at this for now:) How you holding up? Feeling nauseous? Well I hope you feel better soon, take some tums, unless your a girl, then you'll only get constipated.

Excuse me, what was that?

Something I heard someone say recently:

(In an angry tone)

"I'm sorry but that's just how the cat ate the cabbage..."

?????

It was all I could do to not be a smart ass and say to the person to whom that was directed, "Oh, did you know that the cat ate cabbage? I personally had no clue!"

Luckily for all parties involved I kept my trap shut. My dad would be so proud!

Gracie

So Gracie throws up. Like her own spit 'er something. She gives us fair warning with these deep gastrointestinal hacks that sound like an alien is about to burst out of her stomach. So then my sweet sweet husband walks her outside, or if not enough time at least to the linoleum (yay!). I am listening right now to him standing outside, holding her collar saying "DON'T EAT IT! DON'T EAT IT Gracie!" Then petting her belly says "Sorry your belly hurts Gracie, stop licking everything and this won't happen!" What a great daddy!
